Farming is at the heart of Frogmary Green Farm

spraying crops at Frogmary Green Farm

Crops

Frogmary is an arable farm, which means we grow cereal crops such as grass, maize, winter wheat and winter barley. A typical cycle for our farm starts in September/October and the ground is prepared to drill for our winter barley and wheat seeds. When spring arrives, we prepare the land for our maize crops.

With lots of hard work, good weather and good luck, we’ll be harvesting all our crops from June until October.

Renewables

Timber from local woodlands to provide us with a renewable energy source and avoid the need for fossil fuels. All of our crops are fed to an onsite AD (anaerobic digester) to produce biogas, which is supplied back into the national grid and also to Frogmary.

We also have Solar PV panels capturing sunlight and producing electricity and from the AD plant we have electricity and gas piped into the farm, cookery school and classroom. Frogmary is now 100% reliant on renewable energy.

Environment

At Frogmary, farming and respecting our local environment must go hand-in-hand as part of our sustainable activity ethos. We’re working hard in lots of practical ways to conserve and enhance our natural environment by planting trees and hedgerows, surveying local bird and bee populations, creating wetland areas and cutting our carbon footprint.

Since 2002, we have planted 1800 trees and have planted over 5km of hedgerows. Our Pollen and nectar margins help to provide extra habitats for buzzy-bumblebees and other local insects to flourish.
